What is a TENS Device?

EMS (electronic muscle stimulation) devices are used to induce muscle contractions by using electrical impulses. The impulses are delivered to the skin by use of detachable electrodes. Before applying the electrode pads to the skin they are usually lubricate in order to provide proper conduction of the current. TENS ((Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) devices are among the most common and have had observable benefits treating sprains, lower back pain and those with arthritis.

EMS and TENS units are considered devices under the Federal food, drug and Cosmetic Act. The FDA, therefore, becomes responsible for regulating the sale of all electronic muscle stimulators within the United States. In order to legally sell these devices, manufacturers must abide by the pre-market regulatory requirements set out by the FDA. Most EMS (electrical muscle stimulators) that have been reviewed by the FDA are for use by a health care professional for physical therapy and rehabilitation. Companies wishing to sell MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form directly to consumers will need to prove to the FDA that they can be used safely and effectively by the consumer.

The FDA has approved many electrical muscle stimulators for treating certain medical conditions. Doctors use electronic muscle stimulation for such things as muscle re-education, relief of muscle spasms, increasing range of motion, the prevention of muscle atrophy and for treating conditions resulting from stroke, serious injury or major surgery. These devices are generally intended to help patients with impaired muscle function due to some medical condition and not to increase specific muscles enough to affect their appearance.

Any EMS device that has not met the FDA requirements is illegal and the FDA has not determined if they have been properly designed and manufactured for safe and effective use.

Even though an EMS device allows the temporary strengthening, toning or firming of a muscle, there has been no EMS device yet cleared for weight loss, girth reduction or for creating those "rock hard" abs.

An EMS device alone will not produce those "six-pack" abs. Although, applying an electric current to certain muscles can make them contract. Stimulating your muscles repeatedly with the aid of electricity may result in some strengthening and toning, but, based on information currently available, it will not change your appearance without regular exercise and dieting.

Any medical device malfunction should be reported directly to the manufacturer. You can also submit a report to MedWatch, the FDA's voluntary reporting program. There are several ways to submit a report to MedWatch: MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form online, by telephone at 1-800-FDA-1088; by FAX at 1-800-FDA-0178; or by mail to MedWatch, food and drug Administration, HF-2, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20857
