The medical travel summit hosted by the Promed Council of Costa Rica was an outstanding event that pointed out the direction of this essential industry in Costa Rica. Attendance was solid with many of the major players in Medical Tourism represented as well as many large real estate development firms with a vested interest in Medical Tourism projects in Costa Rica, also included were countries like Panama and Colombia seeking to get their nascent Medical Tourism initiatives before a larger audience. The speakers ranged on many vital topics and several truly stood out. The drive of this conference and its speakers was and is attention to high quality benchmarks in all facets of the Medical Tourism industry. From medical travel facilitators to institutional care providers the message was clear. Superb quality of care, consideration to good quality and transparency of services are the watchwords that should carry this industry forward in huge leaps of growth that a lot of seasoned forecasters are predicting. Winning the confidence of the potential patients can only be done with consistent high quality medical care, transparency of service and the excellence of the hospitality industry which supports it.
Many highlights of the conference included Mr. Robert Repke of Global Medical Conexions. Mr. Repkes’ talk was of special interest as his firm provides consulting expert services to many key companies who have switched to the Self insurance model as a matter of need and we feel experience. Most of these businesses like many people today have realized that the typical insurance carriers are basically too expensive and basically not nimble enough to appeal to their demographic specific desires. Not every companies are made equal either in demographics or their insurance requirements. Tailoring a self insurance program to match has the potential to help save North American companies billions of dollars eventually and the Medical Travel model stands to be a key beneficiary of such forward pondering tactics. Incentivizing employees for medical travel is certain to develop into a hot topic for debate in the near future. One we will track closely. What was striking to us and should be encouraging to participants in this industry was just how new this thought is and how few businesses are in fact embracing this model. With a lot of great carriers such as Lloyd’s of London mitigating liability really affordably for businesses offering Medical Travel as an alternative, the risk infrastructure appears to be increasing easily around Medical Travel and the growth potential in this area given these trends is basically shocking.
Yet another very important and informative presenter at the forum was attorney Stephen M. Weiner associate and chair of the health Law Practice. Mr. Weiner touched on some very critical liability and risk issues particularly for Medical Travel facilitators. The extended arm of United States Litigators is alive and well here in Costa Rica and the fine line between being a facilitator and a care provider is one we facilitators should follow carefully. Serious care must be used by facilitators to be transparent in their certification and the range of their services. A facilitator will need to go above and beyond in establishing the lines of communication with possible customers and delineating where facilitation stops and care giving begins. Facilitators offer a valuable service helping patients negotiate the often complicated and intimidating labyrinth of international travel add this to the uncertainty of Medical Care in a foreign country and the expanding importance of the facilitators role and therefore liability becomes clear.
The Medical travel Summit and Promed have shared a very important role in Costa Ricas medical tourism potential and the importance of building trust, offering accreditation, having leaders frontrunners together and above all promoting standards of excellence within all aspects of this industry in Costa Rica.
