Overcoming The Fear Of Death Is Essential If You Want To Be Happy In Life
Death is an eventuality that overcomes all living things and identifying the fact that death is not a tragedy is the first step to overcoming the fear of death. Death is a transition from one place to another, one form to another or from a physical to a non-physical world – depending on one’s beliefs. Billions of people have died before us and billions more will die after us. The cycle of birth and death is inevitable and the sooner that we realize that, the happier we can be and live a happy life.
Most people have witnessed physical death in some form – grandparents, parents, siblings, spouse, children etc. While grieving is a natural process that everyone goes through when they lose a loved one, overcoming the fear of death is a must for everyone. There is a medical term for a fear of death – ‘thanatophobia’. This is a state that can affect millions of people and it is very important to recognize this phobia and get help for it. Apart from fear of death, thanatophobia also refers to fear of anything associated with death.
To begin with, you must realize that you are not the only person who fears death. If you care to look around, you will find that most of the people around you live with such fear in their heart. However, some may keep it concealed while others cannot. At the same time, you must learn to distinguish between plain fear and phobia. Remember that, the fear and worries are natural, not phobia. You can live with fear; phobia will ruin your life.
There is nothing much to worry as long as it is only fear of death, not phobia. As I have already said, fearing death is natural. We have all watched our loved ones dying and wondered what has actually happened to them. Questions about after life naturally pops up in the mind. Sometimes such thoughts give rise to fear. If you have a religious bend of mind, you may try to get the answer in there. Indeed, different religions address the issue in their own way, but all of them can provide some sort of answer to the above-mentioned questions and provide some sort of solace.
You must realize that while fear of death is a normal phenomenon, when that starts affecting your life, you should take recourse to professional help. Know that you are not alone in your battle; millions of others are suffering like you. What is more, such phobias are easily curable, but in contrast, if you leave them untreated, they may give rise to other phobias such as obsessive-compulsive disorder or hypochondriasis.
However, dying alone can be painful; that is why, try to be there with a dying person; somebody will be there with you when your time comes. However, if you are suffering from phobia, that may not be possible. You should know that there are two distinct categories of such phobias; necrophobia and thanatophobia. Both of them require professional handling and so if your fear makes life difficult for you, do see some psychoanalyst for proper diagnose and treatment. if you ignore them, they may make your life a living hell.
Indeed, nothing in this world is permanent; everything that takes birth or grows perishes after certain period. Our body too came from dust and it is natural that it will become dust once again. Yes, some people do die earlier than usual, but that too is natural. If you fear pain, know that death is not painful; on the contrary it releases one from pain. If you are not still convinced talk to somebody close, someone you can trust. Most of all, if you find your mind dwelling on death, make an effort to put your mind to better use. Death in inevitable, but if you want to die with dignity; you cannot afford to fear death.
While a person may suffer pain due to illness before death, death itself is not painful. In fact, death is a release from all pain and suffering. Many people who believe in life after death are even happy when death comes knocking for they know that this is when they will go to heaven, meet God and be free from all pain and suffering endured in their earthly life. Finally, if a loved one is dying and is afraid, be there, encourage him and help him overcome his fear of death so that he can die peacefully.
